Shiva Chalisa

Together with Swami Vishwananda we will celebrate the holy night of Shiva, "Maha Shivaratri".

It is celebrated in the darkest night of the hindu month Phalguna which falls in our calendar this year on the 20th/21st of February.

The Shiva Chalisa Stotra is a Hindu devotional song addressed to Lord Shiva. The Shiva Chalisa is the forty verse prayer to Lord Shiva, the divine consort of Goddess Parvati Devi. Shiva Chalisa or the Shiva Forty was written by Ayodhya Das.

The 40 verse lyrics praise Lord Shiva and request of him to bless the devotee and remove all the problems in life and bring success in everything he/she does.

During the bus drive there was not only singing but also some Sega-dancing

The splashing, which Swami Vishwananda did to all his devotees was in reality a very special blessing, but they only became aware of this grace later in the day.

Special time with Swamiji's singing

This is how Swamiji takes care of us: He repeatedly gives us the chance to be with him - one only has to be ready to get on the bus! He is always there for everyone and makes every single person happy: those who want to drum, to dance, to meditate, have fun....and all the while he gives his very unique blessings - and no-one notices! He never says anything! He wants that we feel it and become aware of it ourselves.

We've all experienced that: it becomes clear only much later that during a "small" and seemingly unimportant moment with him, something very special takes place...

Always when Swami Vishwananda goes to Mauritius, he takes one day off with all his devotees there. Then they rent a bus and go to different places and temples all over the island. They take drums and cymbals and the whole time in the bus is a big party.

They had a picnic near the seaside where Swamiji had big fun splashing around and wetting everybody. (It's a pity that we dont have any photos of this)

There was also a quiet time of a little meditation as you see on the picture.

Swami Vishwananda already said last year, that he will not talk before Darshan anymore, that now it is our turn!

So, Pritala (Swami VishwaVijayananda) spoke about the little "tests" Swamiji gave to him in daily situations!

How little notes aside from Swamiji can challenge him and how they can work him up in sweat.

And that he passes not all tests, and some only barely!

We all picked Him up!

Some of us got the idea that it would be nice if we go all together and pick Swami Vishwananda up from the airport.

So we started to count the people, the cars we need, how much it would cost ...

The next idea was to rent a bus. Everybody had to pay 5,-€ and on the way back Swamiji would sit with us! Wonderful!

We all went a bit earlier to the Temple prayer - shortened it a bit and then everybody quickly got on the bus to Frankfurt airport.

We were all very excited and our hearts were full of joy! This would be a surprise for Swamiji!

We did the Narasimha Prayer and the Hanuman Chalisa and some Guru-Bhajans in the bus and arrived at the airport soon - Swamiji's plane arrived at the same time.

Now we had to wait! And of course we sung Bhajnas, one after the other and the passengers wondered...

And then - finally Swami came!

He was very happy - and we too!

Later in the bus he thanked us for this heartful welcome, for all the love he felt and that to arrive in this cold winter in Germany the warmness of our hearts makes him very happy to be here!

I have given the most easier sadhana of all with Atma Kriya. There is no other sadhana.

Because by practicing the Atma Kriya, you are burning so much Karma from many

lives and so you will reach a very high level. For the rest it is only through my grace.

Enjoy to be here, surrender the maximum you can. The rest it will be given to you.

What is surrender? Surrender is to forget yourself, to hand over yourself and everything. The ego is the arrogance. The ego is attached to you, you cannot control it. You can try to control to your maximum but it stick on you. The mind is the personality of the ego. You can control the mind. It is not easy but it is not impossible.

When you surrender you have to make the first step towards the Divine. You are aware that God is in everything. It is only Him. “Nama gete uta uti”. There is nothing which is not God. Nothing else. Who is Tuka (Bhakti Saint who sang this song)? There is no Tuka. There is no Vishwananda, there is only Him. Nothing else. It is Him who acts in everything.

But just to know it like that does not mean everything. Tomorrow you forget about it through your actions in the world. Once you have surrender, there is not a single moment where the Divine is not present. That is why, you can see in the life of saints that God is always present every single moment.

This is surrender: only Him, nothing else. How do you do that? By continuously thinking of Him. Even if you have to challenge your own self. If you have to challenge your mind, challenge it.

That is why Krishna said: in millions only a few come to me. People are so preoccupied by pain, fame, name forgetting that this is just for some time only. This will only make you jump from one place to the other. More of the satsang on:

A little report after the first Sunday Prayer Live Stream

Today we had our very first live stream of a Sunday Prayer ceremony at Shree Peetha Nilaya.
Almost 50 people from around the world joined us at times. We were about 40 in the temple itself (not everyone could be seen, quite a few "shy" residents preferred to stay behind the camera ;)), including quite a few special guests who came as part of a bhajan training weekend course led by Meeradasi & Ratnamanjari.
As lead singing during prayer was part of the training programme, we had the pleasure of hearing many "first time" singers, or we should rather say that it was the first time we heard them sing during a prayer or Darshan. What we heard was special. It's nice to see and HEAR that there is a seemingly unending reservoir of talent and devotion streaming into the Bhakti Marga river of bhajans and kirtans, making it grow bigger and bigger, and stronger! It was also nice to get a big round of clapping hands and to hear what difference it can make. Hopefully this will inspire many others (guests and Ashram residents alike) to throw in that extra participation, that can lift the prayers to new heights :). We didn't hear any news from Mauritius, and whether Swami Vishwananda succeeded in joining into the live stream, but we know very well, that he watched us irrespectively.
At the end of the prayer Krishna seemed pleased as he gave his Darshan to all. If you kept your live stream on long enough you got a close up live view, but if you left the virtual temple earlier, we have a nice still for you to get his Darshan with a bit of a delay. Here it is (He looks particularly stunning, no?):

The Joy of Community Prayer

Exactly one year ago, on 11 January 2011, Swami Vishwananda hosted a little study circle in Mauritius (where he is again now) in which the importance of community prayer was looked at more closely, based on the teachings of a Russian Orthodox Saint.

To remind ourselves of the most important points we put together a summary that lists five key guidelines that pertain to spiritual community life when it comes to prayer. So in this sense it is first of all relevant for ashrams and similar kind of communities. However, even if you are a devotee or disciple who lives by yourself or with your family, you may find inspiring parts in the attached documents, as they contain important advice in how to approach prayer in general. .

The Great Night of Sankirtan with Swami Vishwananda

Last night after a long Darshan, people were slowly retiring to their rooms for a long-awaited rest. But Guruji had something else in mind. At about 3am accompanied with a little group of devotees Sri Swami Vishwananda started to sing, and going through the corridors of Shree Peetha Nilaya woke everyone up, both guests and residents, making everybody mad with the Love of God and the power of chanting God’s names.

We sang many bhajans and the sankirtan was ecstatic, so much so, that Guruji went into a deep state of consciousness after which he asked everybody to create a big circle. He asked for a bowl of water and some earth to be brought and to be placed in the middle of the circle.

He asked everybody to sing Ram’s name infusing the power of His name into the water which was mixed with earth. He said it will change the karma of the earth. We sang “Rama Krishna Hari” on and on. After a while Guruji said that Hanuman had blessed the water and that we should distribute water to everybody and pour it in all rivers and lakes of the world. The water contains great healing power to help Mother Earth dissolving karma.

“I would like you all to take this water and put in in all the rivers, put even one drop of it. … It can be mixed up as much as we want with any other water, and it will help create positivity in this world. So spread it as much as possible.”

Swami Vishwananda explained that it can help in many ways, including the curing of illnesses. One could see so much joy in everybody’s faces. It was already 6am when the group started to disperse. But many lingered on the site of the Great Night of Sankirtan with Guruji.

Satsang with Swami Vishwananda

Who doesn't know all these questions "What is the meaning of life?", "How do I become self-realized?" and "What is personality?"...

The answers where unique and brilliant! Swami Vishwananda spoke clearly and briefly - sometimes he took his time to explain one matter - in all cases the power and clearness was awesome. Sometimes he gave us a little idea of his divine being which is hidden behind this wonderful, nice Swami from Mauritius.

There were many very interesting questions like "What happens to the soul in case of suicide?" Swami Vishwananda explained in detail that in this case the mind creates something like a dark cloud around the soul; the soul gets more trapped in illusion. It is a heavy energy wich is created and for the little soul-flame it's difficult to reach the light through this dark cloud. The soul has to do more things to go over this barrier.

The access to the Satsang was 20,- €, but the experience was beyond price. Rarely have we experienced Swami Vishwananda like that and were under the impression that in this year 2012 he loosened the hand break a bit...

As some of you know and may also have experienced already, it happens that Swami Vishwananda helps you actively in your life.

This can happen in different ways, but he does it in a very fine and elegant way. Somtimes you understand only after years, that he was the one who did it. He has his own ways to guide us and he works mostly undercover!

We asked him very often und tried to find out more "How do you know?" and "Why you did this or that?" But his answer is always "This is my buisiness. I do my job and you do your job!"

Swami Vishwavijayananda (Pritala) to give a speech.

Pritala spoke about some of his experiences which he had with Swami Vishwananda. If you know Pritala, then you know that the way he talks is very enjoyable and sometimes funny. So it was last night. He spoke in a very lively and amusing way, also with some self-criticism about the "tests" wich he passed or failed.

Swami Vishwananda did not give any speech :-( but sung some enchanting Bhajans before he gave Darshan and afterwards as well.

This series of Darshans in the Christmas week was highly special and touching and we all know that this was an extraordinary gift! Thank you, Swamiji!

Swami Vishwananda spoke about how the master talks to his deciple. This can be though a dream or a inner message.

If this happens it is a very personal message! You should not go around and tell others: 'Swamiji told me this and that...' No! It is a secret what you have to share only with your master. Meditate on it and let it grow. It is like a treasure.

He mentiond also, that from next year on he will not give any talks at Darshan. Everything is written in the books "Just Love".

Swami Vishwananda spoke about how the master talks to his disciple. This can be through a dream or an inner message.

If this happens it is a very personal message! You should not go around and tell others 'Swamiji told me this and that...' No! It is a secret that you have to share only with your master. Meditate on it and let it grow. It is like a treasure.

Swamiji signalized also, that next year he will not talk before Darshan. Everything he said in the last years you can read in the books "Just Love"

The Bhakti Marga Tilak

This afternoon Swami Vishwananda demonstrated how to make a simple tilak on your forehead.

He would be very happy to see that worldwide the tilak looks (more or less) the same and not big and short, or long and thin, or only a red line or the Guru doton top, etc. but that the Bhakti Marga tilak is also applied with a sense of unity.

Here is the demonstration:

All you need is Chandan (it is white or dark and is made of the earth of Vrindavan or Radha-Kund) and Kumkum (red powdered colour) and a thin wooden stick (best is an incense stick - just remove the incense)

The best Chandan is the "Gopi-Chandan".

Just put a few drops of water in your hand and rub the block of chandan together with the water 'til you get a paste.

Dip the ring finger of your right hand into the chandan paste and paint a vertical line in the middle of your forehead. Paint the line in an upward motion; from the base of your nose to the hairline. There are different mantras chanted when applying tilakam on various parts of the body. When applying tilak on your forehead, chant 'Om Keshavaya Namaha'. After this, with your (dry) ring finger, you can clean the middle part creating a 'U' shape. (This symbolizes the feet of Vishnu). You can use the incense stick to go over the lines to make them more apparent but make sure to use your finger to make the tilak first.

With your middle finger, take some more chandan and make the Tulsi leaf, starting from the base of your nose going downwards - creating a leaf shape. You can form and correct the outline of the leaf a bit with your fingers. The Tulsi leaf represents devotion which is small at first, and just like the leaf it keeps increasing in size until we can reach the Lotus Feet of the Lord.

Then, use the incense stick to make the 'Guru-Dot' with the red Kumkum. Paint the dot in the middle of the Tulsi leaf and chant 'Om Sri Gurubhyo Namaha'. Afterwards paint the shakti line in the middle of Vishnu's feet. The line symbolizes Vishnu's Shakti - Lakshmi devi who helps us reduce our attachments which are big at first and then disappear, just like the red line. Draw the line from down to up.

The meaning of the christmas Tree

For dinner He came to the kitchen team and helped serving the meal which was a typical Polish Christmas meal cooked by the Polish group.

In my dream Swamiji was in Brazil and after the Darshan we were in a church. Then, I noticed that Swamiji was talking to one of my cousins (she has never met Guruji in this life). Mahavatar Babaji Commemoration Day

Last night we celebrated Mahavatar Babaji's decision to stay on earth.

Swami Vishwananda spoke about how it was, how Babaji was sitting together with His devotees and told them that He was thinking about ascending back into heaven. His sister, Mataji argued 'But you are everywhere anyhow, You are omipresent in the whole universe - for you it makes no difference if you go to heaven or stay here with us on earth.'

This was a very good argument and so Babaji decided to stay here on earth with us!

This wonderful loving decision is celebrated everywhere in the world on the 30th of November!

Last night Swami Vishwananda asked us all to come to the Bhajan Cafe. He showed us pictures from the pilgrimage in India and explained a bit so that we could get an impression of the deep spirituality of this journey.

Later on Swami Vishwananda played the new "Bhakti-Memo" game with Pritala. We could hear His joy and laughter throughout the whole room while He was winning (of course)!

Every year, in all the world, we celebrate Christmas together; the birth of Jesus Christ, the One who came to redeem mankind, the great Master who is an example of humanness, compassion and devotion.

Swami Vishwananda says that in Mauritius, Christmas is not only a feast for Christians, but is celebrated by members of all religions: “The birth of Christ is something very mystical, because Christ renews his birth every year, whenever we celebrate it, in the heart of man.“

When we try to connect with God, Christ and the great Masters during Christmas time, we create a strong foundation for the New Year. Christ creates in our hearts a lasting landmark of love, so that we recognise that we are all children of the One God.

For this year’s Christmas we have put together a package, which is meant to help us, to find that inner Christmas in our hearts. The package contains a rose quartz heart and a bee’s wax peace candle, which have been blessed by Swami himself and are a reminder of Jesus’ light and love. With the light of the candle, blessed by Swami, we can light all candles of the coming year. The incense symbolises the gifts of frankincense and myrrh of the three Holy Kings. And on the new Christmas DVD, Swami shares his thoughts on Christmas and its meaning.

Pilgrimage with Swami Vishwananda - 7th part

The group of Swami Vishwananda spent the last days in Vrindavan and Mathura, the the birthplace of Krishna and the place where all the Gopi stories come from.

The group of Swami Vishwananda was welcomed very heartfully by Dr. Satya Narayan Das and stayed at his Jiva Institute in Vrindavan.

The next days they went to many of the places where Krishna played his Leelas.

They visited the prison in Mathura, where Krishna was born and some also took a "dip" in the Radha Kund and the Shyama Kund.

Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy

The next stop of the tour with Swami Vishwananda was at Mantralayam, a city on the banks of the river Tungabhadra on the way back to Hyderabad.

Mantralyam is a Hindu religious place where the Moola Brindavanam of Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy is located.

Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy, (1601-1671), was an influential saint in Hinduism. He advocated Vaishnavism (i.e. worship of Vishnu as the supreme God) and Dvaita philosophy advocated by Sri Madhavacharya.

It is believed that Guru Raghavendra Swamy is in the Vrindavana for the past 339 years and will remain there in Jiva-Samadhi for another 361 years. While entering the Vrindavana, Guru Raghavendra Swamy stated that he would be there (in the Vrindavana) for 700 years.

He is considered to be a reincarnation of Lord Rama and Sri Krishna. Shri Raghavendra Swamy is said to have performed many miracles during his lifetime and is believed to continue to bless his devotees to this day and will continue to do so.

His devotees sing this Stotra every day.

Pilgrimage with Swami Vishwananda - 5th part

The next place where the group with Swami Vishwananda went is Ahobilam, about 400 km south of Hyderabad, (8 hours by bus).

The landscape is green, with hills and valleys and a lot of waterfalls and a deep dark forest.

Ahobilam is the place where Lord Narasimha appeared. There are 9 different Narasimha Temples in this aera.

Legend:

According to legends it is believed that when the Devas saw the manifestation of Lord Vishnu as half-lion, half-man, they shouted "Ahobala" (great strength) as well as "Ahobila" (a great cave in which the current sanctum is). Hence, the place can be called either "Ahobalam" or "Ahobilam". The mention of this place is present in the Brahmanda Purana.

The place where Lord Narayana appeared from the stone pillar to kill Hiranyakashipu can be seen in this place. The name of this pillar is Ugra Sthambha, which is now referred to as “Ukku Sthambha” in Telugu, which incorrectly translates to iron pillar.

Prayer to Lord Narasimha:

durgesv atavy-aji-mukhadishu prabhuh

payan nrisimha shura-yuthaparihi

vimunchato yasya mahatta-hasam

disho vinedur hyapatamsh cha garbhaha

"May Lord Nrisimhadeva, who appeared as the enemy of Hiranyakashipu, protect me in all directions. May that Lord be kind enough to protect me in difficult places like the forest and battlefront."

In Shirdi the group also had some time to shop and to have a drink in between. (here enjoying sugar cane juice with Swamiji)

Swami Vishwananda takes care that the non-indians in the group don't get ripped off by some clever shop owners.

The group went to the ashram of Upasani Baba and Godavari Maa, great devotees of Shirdi Sai and saints themselves.

There bhajans were sung and Swami was gifted with a shawl and cloth belonging to both saints....the ashram is for ladies only.

The group also visited Shanipur where they participated in a puja and prayed to lord Shani, the planet saturn, to protect from enemies and ask him not to curse us since he is the God that curses people's lives and makes all bad things happen. The deity is the stone.

Swami Vishwananda and his pilgrimage group spent the last few days in Shirdi.

The City of Shirdi is always packed full with crowds of people, meaning that reaching sacred places often involved standing in long queues.

The group also visited the main and most important place in Shirdi, the Samadhi of Sri Shirdi Sai Baba.

Thanks to a very good and divine timing, the group managed to make it just in time for the Aarti and were able to stay in front of His samadhi for some moments to meditate and receive His blessings.

Another very impressive place was Dwarkamai (Masjid): Baba stayed at this place continuously for 60 years. Innumerable devotees got the blessing of Baba here. The Shila (Stone) on which Baba used to sit is located nearby. The Sacred Fire (Dhuni) lit by Baba is ever burning here. Baba used to give Sacred Udi (Ash) to the devotees to solve their problems in life. Udi distributed to the devotees now comes only from this Dhuni. Baba used to cook food here for distribution to devotees.

Nowadays the house has a big roof and a fence around it. If you come at the right time (very early in the morning ) it is possible to sit and meditate there.

From Nashik we went with Swami Vishwananda by bus through a wonderful countryside to the nearby village called Trimbak.

Trimbakeshwar is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (Lingam (pillar) of Light). The extraordinary feature of the Jyotirlinga located here is its three faces embodying Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Rudra. Due to excessive use of water, the linga has started to erode. It is said that this erosion symbolizes the eroding nature of human society.

The Lingas are covered by a jeweled crown which is placed over the Gold Mask of Tridev (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh). The crown is said to be from the age of the Pandavs and consists of diamonds, emeralds, and many precious stones. The crown is displayed every Monday from 4-5 pm (Shiva).

Adwait Kher, our host, welcomed us very heartfully and made it possible for our group to sit and meditate with Swami Vishwananda near the Lingam for a long time and to get the blessing of its powerful energy.

We were all dressed "typically indian" which was very helpful and opened a few more doors.

Late at night we got on the bus with Swami Vishwananda to go to the next place - more news from there coming soon...

India Pilgrimage - 1st part

From time to time, we will post an update sharing some info about the course of the pilgrimage along with a few photos from the holy places that Swami Vishwananda and the pilgrimage group have already visited. Here is the first part:

After arriving at Mumbai Airport on Saturday night, all of the travellers boarded a bus to Nashik, one of the world's holiest Hindu cities. This place is important for Hindu rituals related to afterlife offerings. The Kumbha Mela is also held here once in every 12 years along the holy river Godavari.

Lord Rama along with Lakshmana and Sita spent 14 years in exile at Tapovan near Nashik.

Godavari Ghat: The Godavari river runs from western to southern India and is considered to be one of the biggest river basins in India.

The Godavari Temple was built by Elder Madhavrao Peshwa's mother, Gopikabai in 1760. This temple is open for devotees for 13 months during the period of Kumbha Mela (once in 12 years). It is also called the Ganga Temple.

Kalaram Mandir:

This temple was built in 1794 and is similar in its architectural design to the Triambakeshwar temple found nearby. The temple is 70 feet in height and was raised from the idea of Gopikabai Peshwa. It was built with black stone from the mines of Ramsej Hill. There is a beautiful gold-plated copper peak on the temple. Beautiful, lavishly adorned icons of Rama, Sita and Lakshman are found in the temple. The temple is surrounded by several smaller temples such as the Vithal temple, Ganapati temple and Maruti temple.

After being energised, the Yantra of the Divine Mother brings prosperity to one's home. Swami Vishwananda also described the different aspects of the Sri Yantra. Afterwards there was a Temple inauguration. The statue (Murti) of Kanchi Kamakshi Devi was fixed on the altar and the inauguration Puja and an Abishekam were performed.

"...Divali is celebrated in India as the Festival of light. Rama was returning from Lanka where he killed the demon Ravana. When he came home, all people celebrated this victory with lighting lamps. It means the victory of the positive.

Divali reminds us about our inner light, the light that banishes the darkness of the mind.

The inner light attracts even more then only positivity - it attracts the Lord himself!

This is what Divali means: Awaken the inner light and let it shine inside yourself!

...Lakshmi removes the darkness and shines inside of you. She gives spiritual wealth and gives whatever pleases the devotee. She gives as much as the devotee is dedicated. If you surrender 100%, she reflects it!

Pray to Goddess Lakshmi that she, in her motherly love, carries you, handles you and looks after you always!"

Lakshmi Kubera Prayer by Swami Vishwananda

On Monday night Swami Vishwananda performed a ceremony for Lakshmi-Kubera.

Swami Vishwananda said: In the Hindu tradition, Kubera is regarded as the god of wealth. Lord Kubera is also known as the god of yakshas (savage beings). Kubera is always remembered with the goddess of fortune, Lakshmi. Chanting of the Kubera Mantra blesses the worshipper with money and prosperity by drawing new avenues and sources of income and wealth. The Mantra of Kubera helps to increase the flow of funds and the ability to accumulate wealth.

One Kubera Mantra is as follows:

"Om Yakshyaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaaya Dhanadhanyadi Padayeh

Dhana-Dhanya Samreeddhing Me Dehi Dapaya Swaha"

Meaning of the prayer: Kubera, the lord of yakshas, bless us with wealth and prosperity. One who worships lord Kubera and Lakshmi can never fall short of money and material comforts. The special puja of Kubera is performed on Dusshera, Dhan triyodasi and Deepawali, asking for prosperity and blessings.

Visit of Anthony Kiedis by Swami Vishwananda

Last Friday afternoon, Anthony Kiedis (the lead singer of the "Red Hot Chilli Peppers") came for tea to Sri Swami Vishwananda. He is currently on tour and gave a concert later that evening in the Frankfurter Festhalle.

It was a relaxed and warm encounter, Anthony was very friendly and open. He came with his friend Beth Jeans Houghton, who has her own band and also makes wonderful music.

He visited the Hindu temple and also the chapel and when he stepped into the art atelier, he asked one of our icon painters, Rajani, who she was painting and in her excitement she first couldn't remember the name of the Saint. It was a very funny and sweet moment.

Before Anthony's departure back to Frankfurt, Swami Vishwananda gave him (amongst other things) an icon of the Divine Mother.
